Look to Others for Ideas
Look to Others for Ideas If we had all the answers to all the questions, where would the fun be? Life was meant tochallenge, excite, sadden, frustrate and perhaps all at the same time. When times are uncertain or we lack clarity or even ideas, it is only natural to ask for advice from those we trust. This comes easier to some than others. Asking for help makes us feel vulnerable. Asking for advice shows wisdom. Think of the people you know who you trust and value. If you asked them for advice or suggestions, might they have some words for you? They have lived through experiences different from yours. They have viewed it through a different lens. This offers wonderful perspective. I had coffee with two women yesterday. Each were asking for advice and I gladly and freely gave my thoughts. They both expressed surprise at my suggestions because they had never thought in quite the same way I did. We have filters that sometimes prevent usfrom seeing some options, that is why weshould look to others fortheir unique perspectives. We may not always agree but having options is better than feelinghopeless or helpless. The Wall Street Journal has asked several job seekers to blog about their job search. You canread about each persons experience and perhaps learn something that might help you. Heresthe link.

How a Team Meeting could help you Progress in your Career IM HIRED
How a Team Meeting could help you Progress in your Career When you think the meeting is over and someone asks another question When you think the meeting is over and someone asks another question We have all left a team meeting thinking why couldnât that have been sent in an email? Some offices have a culture of meetings for the sake of meetings. The problem being is itâs easy to tune out when youâre roped into the tenth meeting of the week. However, if youâre looking to progress in your career, those seemingly useless meetings could be your ticket to standing out. So stop doodling or considering what youâre going to eat for lunch and instead focus on getting noticed. Put yourself forward Developing in your career is all about putting yourself forward for additional responsibility and new opportunities. Team meetings are great chance to make people aware youâre open to supporting others or getting involved in an upcoming project. Whilst most people might sit back when the boss asks for volunteers, be the person with your hand in the air. Show youâre eager to impress by putting yourself forward for a new challenge. Listen to Others Active listening is essential for effective communication. You may think that putting all your ideas on the table is the right way to go, but donât railroad the meeting. Talking over others or not giving them the ability to contribute is simply rude. A team player will encourage others in the team to speak up, not overwhelming those who are less confident. Be part of the discussion Bouncing off ideas with colleagues is one of the main benefits of a team meeting. You may be struggling to find the solution to that tricky problem, so why not open it up to the group for suggestions. This practise works both ways, when others are facing setbacks help them by offering any recommendations. Build on ideas as a team and notice how concepts can snowball into a more advanced final products. Introduce new Ideas Bringing new ideas or ways of working to the forefront may seem like a scary prospect. Companies are always looking for ways to improve their performance or efficiency and a team meeting can be forum to get your opinions raised. Whilst all your ideas may not be taken forward, remember no idea is a bad idea. Think outside the box and present initiatives that could benefit your organisation or team. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. Helen Keller _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Be Prepared Team meetings might be a second thought but put some effort into your pre-meeting preparations and get organised. If you are given an agenda, ensure you have completed any ground work. Consider writing any notes for new ideas or suggestions as a prompt for the meeting. Donât be the person who is left out the loop. If youâre not sure what the meeting is about, ask the question instead of being caught off guard.

Bob Bly Freelance Writing Resume Tips
Bob Bly Freelance Writing Resume TipsThe article 'Bob Bly Freelance Writing Resume Tips' is a terrific resource for writers who need to get their resumes approved. This is a great article, especially for those who are beginners or for those who are trying to improve their resume's appearance, and, of course, it is also of particular interest to freelance writers. In this article I will explain how you can use this information to increase your chances of getting your resume noticed by hiring managers.A good quality resume should not be confused with a poor-quality resume. You need to remember that a resume is an important document, so you need to make sure that the document you create is perfect. If you want your resume to be seen by as many people as possible, then you need to have it written in a way that will attract attention. Since we are discussing tips for writers, I will begin with the three most important components that must be present in a good-looking resume.Firstly, remem ber that when creating a resume, you should make sure that it is a professional document. There are lots of steps you have to go through to make sure that your resume is just like a report that has a neat layout and organization. This is a great strategy if you are an employee at a large company that requires a regular daily job description of a company's employees. However, if you are a freelancer, the first priority is to get noticed.Second, you have to make sure that your resume contains interesting facts and interesting keywords. We all know that a good headline and description are all it takes to impress your readers. The key point here is that your resume must convey the most impressive points about you in a concise way. Remember that you do not need to go overboard, but you also do not need to over-promise either.Third, try to avoid using keywords as much as possible. Remember that while search engines are very particular about keywords, humans have more diverse interests. Wh at they see and hear may not appeal to the search engines, so use a combination of keywords to direct the attention of the reader. Instead of writing a keyword-heavy resume, think of the words that would best describe you as a person, as well as the people who have seen your work. These three tips are good ones for freelance writers. If you follow them, you can improve your chances of making your resume look professional and provide the best information to recruiters. Remember that it is crucial to take the time to get your resume reviewed so that the hiring manager will get the right impression. If you want to improve your chances of getting your resume seen by hiring managers, then you have to improve the presentation of your resume. Use these three tips to make your resume stand out from the crowd. Good luck!

Simple Ways to Master the Art of Networking
Simple Ways to Master the Art of Networking You arrive alone. Your heart is beating a little faster than normal and suddenly all of your charisma and charm go out the window. You try to lock eyes with someone so that you can find a temporary home in what can feel like a sea of strangers. But everyone looks happily engaged in conversation. While this might sound like your experience at a middle school dance, itâs also what many people feel when they enter a networking event. These are completely natural reactions, even for the biggest extroverts. The great news is that people go to these events to meet strangers, so youâre in the same position as everyone else. Here are 17 helpful tips for navigating a networking event and making the most of your time there: Find the bar! Whether or not youâre drinking, itâs always a great idea to position yourself at the edge of the bar. Many people run for the bar when they get to a networking event in order to get a short respite from an overwhelming entrance. If you position yourself a few steps from the bar, you can easily strike up a conversation as people turn with drink in hand. Be yourself. Networking events are meant as jumping-off points for relationship building. If you canât be yourself, youâll be starting off these new relationships with a lie. Donât try to be the person you think others want to meet. Be genuine. The people you connect with when you are authentic are the ones youâll want to stay in touch with. Set reasonable expectations. When attending an event, understand what you are there to do. Is your goal to feel out a new organization and get to know the vibe? Is it to meet five new people? Is it to meet one or two specific people? These are all reasonable expectations and it takes a little pre-planning to set these goals. Donât spread yourself too thin. Start by spreading a large net to test out a handful of organizations and then commit yourself to a only a few as time goes on. You want to become a staple at these events. When you bounce around to too many events where no one knows you, youâre doing yourself a disservice by having to build your brand from scratch in each environment. Youâll also find that networking is a lot more fun when you become a regular. People will sing your praises to new attendees (this is always better than you doing it yourself) and youâll see lots of familiar faces. Take notes. When you ask for someoneâs card after having a great conversation, take notes on their business card after they walk away or immediately after the event. This will help you to be more specific in your follow-up. Introduce yourself to the organizer. A great way to get to know more about an organization and who is involved is to seek o ut the event organizer and introduce yourself. He/she can then help point you in the right direction and can introduce you to other attendees to get you off on the right foot. Treat people like friends. Would you go to a friend, interrupt his/her conversation, hand over a business card, talk about yourself and then walk away? Of course not. Treat new networking relationships as youâd treat your friendships. Build rapport and trust that business will happen. Ask great questions. The only way to get to know someone else is to ask them genuine and thoughtful questions. Itâs always best to walk away from a conversation having allowed the other person to speak more than you did. Not only will they feel great about the conversation, but youâll have gotten to know a lot about him/her, helping you plan and execute your follow-up more thoughtfully. Sharing is caring. This is no less true now than it was in kindergarten. If you are willing to share your contacts and resources, others wi ll be more likely to help you as well. Develop a sincerity in your giving nature without expectation of something in return. Consider their network. When meeting people, itâs important to remember that even if they canât help you directly, someone in their network probably can. Treat connecting like a puzzle. If youâre asking great questions and considering how you can help others, youâll naturally start to draw connections between who you are talking to and others in your network. Offer to make these connections! Perhaps they are two people who have the same target client industry, or maybe you know that a contact of yours is looking for the service the other provides. Encourage both parties to follow up with you after they meet so that you can hear what came of their interaction. It will not only pay dividends for you, it will also help you hone your matchmaking skills. Donât be a card spammer. The closest thing to you throwing all of your business cards away is handing them out to anyone and everyone you meet without them asking. If you havenât built enough rapport with someone to encourage them to ask for your card, donât offer one. Be specific. The more specific you can be about what you do and what others can do to help you (if they ask), the better. Tell them the names of a few specific companies youâre looking to work with. Ask yourself why they should care. Consider why the person youâre speaking to should care about what youâre saying. Craft your conversations accordingly. You only have a short time to make an impression, so try to make it favorable. Be engaged. Keep eye contact with your conversation partner. Nod your head and tilt your body towards them when youâre speaking. These small cues go a long way towards making them feel like you care, which helps you to build rapport and trust: the foundation on which you can later do business. Do NOT âwork the room.â Donât try to meet as many people as possible in a room; focu s on making just a few solid connections. People can sense when youâre simply speaking with them to grab their card and go. These short interactions will not be memorable and therefore work against you. Aim to meet a few people and begin a meaningful dialogue. Donât be afraid to join in. There is nothing wrong with joining a conversation and waiting for a natural break in the chatter to introduce yourself. In most cases, the people who are already speaking will enjoy the interruption because it gives them a chance to meet someone new. If you sense that youâve entered into a serious discussion, itâs okay to politely excuse yourself. Now youâre prepared to rock your next networking event and hopefully build some meaningful relationships in the process. And remember; do talk to strangers! How To Quit A Job You Just Started - TheJobNetwork
How To Quit A Job You Just Started - TheJobNetwork You did everything right and landed the job. Trouble is, through no fault of your own, itâs just not what you expected it would be. Youâre suddenly desperate not to work there anymore, but youâre worried that youâre stuck. You donât want to anger your new colleagues or boss. You donât want to risk being blacklisted from future positions at the company. You donât want to bring your educational institution a bad name. And you definitely donât want to be seen as a quitter. What if you get to your next job and feel the same way? You canât just keep bailing after week one! googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0'); }); These are all things to think through if you find yourself in an unhappy situation. But do bear in mind that there are other considerations. You wonât be as happy, fulfilled, challenged, or productive at an unfulfilling job. Getting out now, once you can see the unpleasant future spilling out before you, might just s ave both you and your boss a lot of trouble and mental waste. If you do decide to quit, be absolutely sure before you do. Thatâs the most important factor in deciding whether to breach decorum and cut your losses before youâve even gotten situated in a new position. The second most important thing is to exit gracefully.Hereâs how:Resign tactfully.Donât burn any bridges. Do what you can to keep these contacts. And do it in person. This is not the time for letters or emails (though you should have a formal resignation letter ready to go after you meet to discuss with your boss). You owe it to your supervisor to explain why you are bailingâ"particularly after so much joint effort to get you on board.Be honest and apologetic.Donât make weak excuses that you think will make your boss feel empathy for you. Give the real reason, or the closest to it you can get, and still remain tactful. Be genuinely sorry for the inconvenience, and pivot to showing how this is best for the comp any and your quitting is actually something of a selfless act. If youâre the wrong fit for this job, itâs your moral duty to speak up and say so before wasting time and resources.Give proper notice.Youâll want to do this with plenty of time for them to find someone else. You should even offer, if at all possible, to stay until they find and train your replacement. This could be great for you if you donât have an alternative job lined upâ"use the time to find another one! Remember, you are inconveniencing them, and should behave accordingly.Consider that you might be asked to stay.In most cases, youâll be given a bunch of reasons to stay. Ask yourself before you speak to your boss whether there are any conditions that, if changed, would make you actually want to stay. Have an answer prepared either way.Think harder next time.Donât beat yourself up. But do let this be a lesson that you should really consider all angles of a new job before accepting it. Saving yourself the embarrassment and a whole lot of extra uncertainty and work.

The 11 Types of Parents That Teachers Secretly Cant Stand
The 11 Types of Parents That Teaczu sichs Secretly Cant Stand Therbeies always one parent who insists on packing their daughter a peanut anken and jelly sandwich, despite the schools strict policy against peanut butter for the sake of other students with nut allergies. And then theres the parent whose child could do no wrong, even when theyre using a straw to fire spitballs into aelendher classmates hair from across the room. The classmate whose parents call every other day to critique the teachers lesson plans and offer unsolicited (and unfounded) suggestions.Overly involved and, equally, totally unengaged parents can make a teachers job a living hell. And you dont want to be the parent who makes the teachers job a living hell. Because the parent who does that ends up burning the teacher out and that does no good for anyone (including your precious child). We reached out to teachers to share the worst type of parent theyve ever had to deal with, and heres what they had to say. The t akeaway Avoid acting like the following.1. The Helicopter ParentI have a few students with some serious helicopter parents, who are basically trying to do my job for me, says Lynn, a high school teacher in New Jersey. Theyre constantly calling the school, sometimes even throughout the day, to check in. They send their kids with notes for me about what to look out for and how to handle certain behaviors... as if I havent been trained through years of teaching to handle my students. Theyre always just watching a little too closely and it gives me (and the kids) zero room to breathe. My students are in high school theyre too old to have helicopter parents2. The My-Kid-Could-Do-No-Wrong ParentI have one student who is always disrupting the class so much so that Ive had to tritt him out of class several times this year and send him to the principles office, says Anne, a middle school teacher in New Jersey. But every time his mother comes to pick him up, she accuses me of treating her s on differently than the other students, claiming that I just dont like him. What I dont like is when hes chucking spitballs across the room and making crude jokes in class. Still, to his mother, he can do no wrong. And I know that means his poor behaviors will never change.3. The Permissive ParentOne of my students comes to class every day showing off something new I swear her parents just give her anything she wants, says Francis, a middle school teacher in New York. It affects the other students who dont feel like theyre as loved when they dont come to school every day with a brand new Hermes bracelet or Chanel bag. It hurts their self-esteem, even though, to me and the other teachers, its obvious that this particular student is the one with confidence issues. She wants to show off all of these material things to the other kids, but I think her parents need to realize what theyre allowing to happen here frankly, entitlement and greed.4. The Dismissive ParentThe worst kind of paren t is one who doesnt hold their child accountable for their behavior or lack of developmental growth and, instead, blames the teacher, says Troy Dot, a middle school teacher. The one who expects all learning to only be done in the classroom and none at home... The parent who never looks on their lack of involvement in their childs academic future at all.5. The Apathetic ParentIt was really, really hard for me to see parents who were completely apathetic or just noncommunicative about their child(ren), says Isabella. Being a new parent myself, I can understand that parenting is super tough however, children depend on you. For a parent just not caring about the child(ren) they send to school, breaks my heart. For those kids to go home to someone who doesnt ask about their day, their grades, their friends... Its just not fair.6. The Defensive ParentIn my opinion, one of the worst types of parents is the he/she is never like this at home parent, says Kate L. I can empathize that it come s from a defensive place that they do not want to act like a behavior their teacher brings to their attention is something they would be okay with, but it is counterproductive to their child becoming a person in the world outside of them.7. The Yes ParentTeachers spend a lot of time planning for parent meetings to discuss what both parties, as well as the student, needs to do to be successful, says Kate L. The parents who yeses you but doesnt do anything even after repeated meetings are frustrating because they care more about presenting themselves as being on board more than doing what is asked of them (of course, Im saying that with the caveat that being a parent is not easy and life is busy and we are human).8. The I Dont Know What Happens in That House But This Doesnt Happen at My House ParentThese are the parents who are not together and blame everything that their kid isnt doing on one another, says Kate L. I think of parents who I have had meetings with both of them saying, I dont know what happens in that house, but this doesnt happen in mine house, and my response was Well, she has completed zero percent of her homework this semester so it is not happening at either household.9. The Nondirect ParentThe worst is parents who do not communicate through direct means, says Cynthia, a high school teacher. More than once, Ive had parents contact the administration or someone above me when the problem could have been solved by reaching out to me first.10. The Too-Talkative ParentI cant stand the parents who do the talking for their children instead of having children advocate for themselves they set their kids up for failure, says Cynthia. Ill have no idea if a kid needs help or is wondering about grades, and the first time I hear about it is from their parent, not the kid.11. The Blame-Game ParentThe worst case of a parent is one who blames the teacher for their childs failure in a class, says Miranda. We can reach out via email, phone call or even progress reports to warn the parent about their child failing, and somehow its our fault what we must not be doing right in our classroom. What we didnt explain in the way their child understood. What we arent doing to make sure their child is successful. There has been such a significant shift of blame lately, where the child is never held accountable for what he or she did or didnt do to cause failing grades. Its become the teachers fault nearly immediately.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
